The study focuses on the origin and fate of iron and manganese present in the Seine and its estuary. These two metals, considered to be non polluting, were selected because they can play a role as markers for processes involving highly toxic metals. The behaviour of iron and manganese was studied in the water column, suspended particles and sediments. The significance of heterogeneous exchange reactions) in these metals' transport and recycling was highlighted. Sediment not only acts as a trap for heavy metals, but can be a potential source of metal contaminants linked to physical and chemical variations of the environment. These results must be taken into account in impact studies for developments (redistribution of sediments, dredging, etc.).
