When Amedeo Modigliani met gallery owner Paul Guillaume in 1914, in cosmopolitan Paris, the artist was at a turning point in his career : he abandoned sculpture to devote himself exclusively to painting. Guillaume bought, sold, and collected more than a hundred and fifty of his works. This volume explores the relationship between the painter and his art dealer in the artistic and literary context of Paris in the 1910s. It highlights their shared love of African art as well as the decisive role played by Guillaume in promoting Modigliani's work on the French and United States art markets following the artist's death.
